Milliken had 8,386 people at the 2020 census, which makes it substantially bigger than most people assume, and it sits inside the Greeley metropolitan area rather than out on its own. What it does not have is an interstate.
That absence is the most useful thing about this page, because it means Milliken glass damage behaves differently from the rest of our area, and it behaves in your favour.
Why so much Milliken damage is fixable
The driving here is short and local. Runs into Johnstown, over to Greeley, out along Highway 60 or 257. Ten and fifteen minute hops at thirty five to fifty miles per hour rather than an hour at seventy five.
Slow impacts make shallow damage, and shallow damage fills cleanly. A proper repair draws the air out of the cavity under vacuum and replaces it with a resin that expands and contracts at close to the same rate as glass, then cures it hard with ultraviolet light. Once the void is gone, the stress concentration is gone, and the chip stops being a crack waiting to happen.
The result is that Milliken has the highest repair rate of any town we serve. Most of what we are called to here never becomes a replacement.
What actually makes a chip unrepairable
It is worth being precise about this, because it is the difference between a free half hour visit and a bill.
- Contamination. Dirt, wax or water that has been sitting in the cavity for weeks stops the resin bonding properly. This is the most common reason a repairable chip becomes a replacement, and it is entirely preventable.
- Length. Once a crack runs past roughly the length of a bank card, resin can sometimes stop it spreading but cannot restore the panel.
- Position. Damage touching the black ceramic band at the edge sits in the most stressed part of the glass. Damage directly in the driver line of sight leaves visible distortion after repair, which is a legal question in Colorado as well as a cosmetic one.
- Depth. If the damage has gone through the outer layer into the plastic interlayer, the panel is compromised rather than chipped.
Notice that only one of those is about the original impact. The other three are about what happened afterwards.
The tape trick, and why it matters more here
Put a piece of ordinary clear tape over a fresh chip. It does nothing for the strength of the glass. What it does is keep water and road grit out of the cavity, and contamination is the number one reason a Milliken chip stops being fixable.
Thirty seconds of tape can be the difference between a free repair and a replacement. In a town where most damage arrives shallow and fillable, that is the single highest value thing you can do.

Autumn is when the repair rate collapses
Every year the same thing happens and it happens on a schedule.
Chips collected through August and September sit open, collecting water. The first hard freezes arrive in late October and November, the water inside the cavity turns to ice and expands by roughly nine percent, and it does that inside damage that is already the weakest point in the panel.
A chip that was a thirty minute free repair in September is a replacement in November. We watch this happen to the same chips in the same order every autumn. If you are reading this in September with damage in your glass, that is the whole message of this page.

Highway 60 and 257
Milliken has no interstate, but it does have two state highways carrying farm traffic, aggregate and the daily flow between I-25 and Greeley. That is where the minority of damage that is not repairable tends to come from.
Following distance is the whole game on those roads. Six seconds behind anything loaded rather than the two or three that feels normal. Stones lose energy quickly over distance, and distance is the only part of the equation you control.
What it costs
Most Colorado insurers waive the deductible on a chip repair, so in practice it usually costs you nothing. That is not a promotion, it is how comprehensive coverage works, because filling a chip is far cheaper for the insurer than replacing the windshield later.
