A chip the size of a dime and a crack running the width of the glass are not the same problem, but drivers get quoted the same way for both. This page gives you the actual thresholds we use in Greeley so you can work out which one you are looking at before anyone quotes you.
The short version

- Damage at or near the edge. The perimeter is where the glass bonds to the frame and carries load. Edge cracks spread fast and compromise the bond.
- Anything in the driver’s direct line of sight. Colorado requires an unobstructed view through the windshield, and a repair scar in that zone is its own problem.
- Damage that penetrates both layers. A windshield is two sheets of glass with a plastic interlayer. If the inner layer is broken, repair is not an option.
- Multiple chips close together, or more than about three across the glass.

Not reliably. Resin restores a small cavity, but across six inches or more it cannot carry the load the original glass did. The windshield is a structural component that supports the roof in a rollover and backstops the passenger airbag, so a marginal repair is not worth the saving.
Will a repair be invisible?
No, and any shop that promises that is overselling. A good repair leaves a faint mark, restores the strength, and stops the spread. That is the goal.

Does a repair affect my ADAS camera?
A repair inside the camera’s field of view can. If your vehicle has lane keeping or automatic emergency braking, mention it when you call, because the location of the damage relative to the camera changes the answer.
