Toyota 4Runner Windshield Replacement, Greeley CO

The 4Runner is unusual among the vehicles on this list, because the fifth generation ran with the same body for well over a decade. That means a 4Runner in your driveway could be anything from an early car with no driver assistance whatsoever to a late one with a full camera-based safety suite.

Same shape, same glass aperture, completely different job. So the year matters more here than on almost anything else we work on.

Does yours have a camera at all?

This is the first question and it changes the price substantially.

Earlier fifth generation 4Runners were sold without a forward-facing camera. On those, a windshield replacement is exactly what people imagine: remove, prepare, bond, cure, done. No calibration step, no scan tool, a simpler and cheaper job.

Later cars gained Toyota Safety Sense, which uses a forward camera behind the mirror for lane departure alert, pre-collision braking and adaptive cruise. On those, calibration is part of the job and it is not optional.

Do not go by the year alone. Look behind your rear view mirror. If there is a camera housing there, calibration applies. If the space is empty, it does not.

Body on frame, and what it does to a chip

The 4Runner is body on frame rather than unibody, which is why it is good off road and why it rides the way it does. It also flexes differently.

A unibody car is one rigid structure and the windshield is part of it. A body on frame vehicle has more movement between the body and the chassis, and on rough ground that movement works the glass aperture.

The practical consequence is that a chip in a 4Runner that sees genuine off-road use spreads sooner than the same chip in a commuter car. If you take yours up forest service roads or out on the county gravel regularly, treat a chip as urgent rather than as something for next month.

Where 4Runner damage comes from around here

These are Colorado cars in the truest sense. Most of the damage we see was collected on a trip rather than a commute: mountain roads, forest service tracks, winter runs when everything is sanded, and the gravel county roads out east.

Two specific hazards worth naming. Shaded mountain curves hold sand and grit long after the rest of the road has cleared. And driving at altitude puts the glass through a much wider temperature range in a day than ordinary driving does, which is exactly the cycling that spreads existing damage. See why Colorado temperature swings turn chips into cracks.

Roof racks and accessories

A lot of 4Runners here carry a roof rack, a light bar or a rooftop tent mount. None of that prevents a windshield replacement, but it is worth mentioning when you book.

Anything that overhangs the top of the glass affects access, and occasionally something has to come off to get the panel in cleanly. Better to know that before we arrive than to discover it in your driveway.
